Marakei Island Council

The Marakei Island Council has completed implementation of the Universal Access Program (UAP), receiving critical support to strengthen its internet and Wi-Fi capabilities in support of council operations and community engagement.
The program delivered the infrastructure needed for improved connectivity, complemented by one year of fully sponsored bandwidth to ensure the council had the resources to operate effectively from the outset. A central component of the initiative was the establishment of a Wi-Fi sales business model, enabling the council to generate its own revenue and set aside funds for the ongoing maintenance of its internet and Wi-Fi services.
Following completion of the project, both council members and residents are already experiencing the benefits of the newly established Wi-Fi service. Improved connectivity has supported more efficient communication, better access to information, and stronger community engagement. The revenue-generating model further strengthens the sustainability of these services, giving the council a reliable means of maintaining continuity going forward.
Overall, the UAP support marks a transformative milestone for Marakei Island, strengthening the council's operational capacity while improving residents' access to digital resources and connectivity.
